PurAmino is a hypoallergenic, iron fortified, amino acid based baby and toddler formula used for infants and toddlers with severe cow’s milk protein allergies, and other food allergies. It also is suitable for conditions such as protein maldigestion, malabsorption/chronic diarrhea, short bowel syndrome and eosinophilic esophagitis. It contains omega 3 DHA and ARA, important fatty acid nutrients that provide brain support and eye development for your baby. PurAmino can provide a sole source of nutrition for infants up to age 6 months and provide a major source of nutrition for toddlers through 24 months of age, when indicated. Normally, in feeding infants, gradual introduction of solid foods after 4–6 months of age is an important developmental as well as nutritional step. In cases of severe and multiple food allergies or intolerances, PurAmino is sometimes continued as a milk substitute in the diet of children. This and similar supplemental use of PurAmino in the diet beyond 24 months of age may make a significant contribution to maintenance of good nutrition. PurAmino is created by the maker of Nutramigen—the #1 recommended brand* for managing infants who are allergic to cow’s milk protein‡. ‡By pediatricians who recommend a specific formula. *Enfamil is the #1 pediatrician recommended brand of Infant Formula QuintilesIMS, using the ProVoice Survey fielded from October 1, 2016 to September 30, 2017. PurAmino is also suitable for other conditions that may require an elemental diet

It’s been an adventure (and not in a good way) trying to find the right formula for my baby. This is my 4th child and had never encountered anything like this before. I wasn’t able to breastfeed due to some health issues. Here is what we tried previously, in the order we tried it.
Similac pro advance:
daughter was extremely fussy all day
Barely slept
Gasy
Bad face rash
Would scream and arch back in pain while feeding
Eventually had poop in stool
I was extremely concerned and took her to her dr.
Nutramigen (8 weeks old was changed to this milk):
Better, slept more but still not how she should be
Extremely gassy and would cry when passing gas
Would cry while pooping every time
Still had scaly skin on her face
Eventually had blood in poop along with mucous
Puramino (at 12 weeks):
Made a huge difference
Slept better
Happy baby
Less gassy
No more crying while pooping
But still scaly skin in face
Kabrita toddler (decides to try it after reading Aton of reviews. Seemed like this helped with the dry flaky skin);
Daughter cried at first feeding like she was in extreme pain
Shortly after she pooped and it was a acidy and mucous
Projectile throw up all night
This was the worst decision I could have made. I should have just stuck with puramino.
Puramino is the best one so far. After our experience with Kabrita, I’m hesitant to try anything else. Wish we could get rid of her scaly skin, but outside of that she’s good. It is expensive but worth every penny to see her in peace and see her smile.
I also wouldn’t try switching formulas without consulting her pediatrician. I made the choice with Kabrita and saw an immediate negative reaction and it was extremely scary.

We discovered our newborn had cow milk protein allergy. She started developing rashes around her face and body. At first, we fed her Nutramigen and the equivalent similac hypoallergenic formula, and let me tell you… they are not pleasant to the senses. That wasn’t why we stopped though, while the rashes went away, she had too many bowel movements to count. We then switched over to puramino, no bad taste and no bad smell. Bowel movements dwindled to normal numbers.

This stuff is a life saver. We have preemie twins, and Puramino got them back on track after a long stretch in which they had a lot of trouble eating normal formula.
However, that’s not the point of this review. Chances are if you’re even looking at this highly specialized formula, you know you need it. Here are two things you also need to know:
1. If you have been blessed with multiples (i.e. twins, triplets, etc.), Mead Johnson has a program in which you can periodically get cases of this stuff for free. This formula gets expensive, so don’t miss out on this if you qualify. To take advantage of this program you will need to go through your pediatrician, but it is well worth the effort. In our case, the Mead Johnson sales rep had several cans ready for us the same day our pediatrician made her request to the company.
2. Talk to your baby’s pediatrician about having this formula covered by insurance. In some states, insurance companies are MANDATED to cover this if your child has been diagnosed with certain allergies, digestive issues, etc. I can’t speak for all states, but here in Texas our insurance company will foot the bill for our future elemental formula needs. Mead Johnson and the makers of Elecare both had helpful information on their websites regarding which states mandate elemental formula coverage. Doing your homework and asking your doctor the right questions could save you a bundle.

Update July 2020: I had a second child in 2019. Same issues minus the food allergies (he has to be tested). I had a milk supply, but my child reacted to it. Had to stop breast feeding. My child has reflux with milk protein allergy – his butt was raw from diarrhea and his reflux was triggering. I already knew the signs and got the prescription for Puramino from our MD, and had the prior authorization done by her. We filled it with CVS this time, and have had no issues ordering refills.
As soon as he started the formula, his butt cleared up within a few days, burping with no regurgitation. We had solid stools. He’s been on it for over a year, drinking it like a champ. Still can’t tolerate milk, even lactose free milk, and has reflux (using First Lansoprazole aka Prevacid); but going to try to switch over to Puramino Jr, hopefully that goes well too.
I could not recommend this formula enough. It is a lifesaver.
Old review: My son is five now, but had severe reflux along with a milk allergy and food allergies for the first 3 years of his life.
This formula saved his life. He could not tolerate any formula, not even Pregestamil or Elecare. They would trigger the reflux. I had resorted to trying to start my milk supply again, and then I came across Puramino.
I received a sample from Enfamil, tried it and heard my son burp for the first time unassisted. I started crying. My son started putting on weight steadily from there, only having issues when we had to change medicine for reflux to Prevacid, because Ranitidine stopped working.
I paid a lot for Puramino out of pocket, but it can be covered by insurance, do a prior auth with your doctor. I used to get my monthly supply from Walgreens, until my son was weaned.
It was so worth it.

This formula has kept my son healthy and growing strong since only a few days after birth. We had a very difficult first few months that began after starting him on a regular infant formula at the hospital. Despite noticing a lot of spitup, we were assured that it was normal – and this being our first child, we didn’t really know any better. After being discharged from the birth stay, things progressed and worsened, my newborn son started to look withdrawn, his color was bad, he was fussy constantly, and he was projectile vomiting after every bottle. We were rushed back to the hospital at 4 days old and spent a week there trying to determine what was wrong. Come to find out, it was a severe milk allergy. They started us on nutramigen but he was still unable to process that so PurAmino was the next step. I was lucky enough to be in a city where a PurAmino distributor delivered us a sample right away so that we could stop feeding my son the formulas his body couldn’t handle. Within a few days, he had a complete turnaround. He was alert, happy, and finally putting weight back on.He is now 16 months old, very smart, and since getting him onto PurAmino, he’s been growing at a steady rate. He’s now 98% in height and 95% in weight and quickly transitioning onto solids. But, one of the best things about PurAmino is that the taste he grew to love and depend on since birth is one that can stay with him until he is fully weaned from bottles at 2 years of age. As a mom to a child with such a severe allergy to dairy (and soy), I feel comfortable knowing that he can get the nutrition he needs from this formula for a little bit longer than the classic 12 month mark. That lets me sleep better at night… and keeps him growing strong and healthy.I don’t know where we would be without PurAmino. It is expensive, but given the options we were facing, I couldn’t be more thankful to have had access to this formula. And, for what its worth, I always purchased it from JBS-APS directly which made the hectic chaotic life with a newborn just a tad simpler too!
